Frequently Asked Questions

- Licensing

What are the computer requirements for running FASTRAD? FASTRAD runs on Windows systems (7/Vista - 4 Go RAM - 50 Mo HDD, XP - 1024 Mo RAM - 50 Mo HDD, 2000 - 512 Mo RAM - 50 Mo HDD. It also runs on Linux or Mac OS with the use of a Windows emulator (Wmware, …). Video Card: 3D Graphic Card - 128 Mo RAM.

What is the license policy? As of 2012, the FASTRAD license is ONLY distributed on a USB key fob. One FASTRAD license can be used on multiple PCs through the use of this dongle (one session at a time). A user can use FASTRAD on any PC where FASTRAD is installed with the USB key fob.

What is the duration of the license? The distribution is based on an annual leasing of the license. After the expiration date, the user has to renew his one-year leasing to continue using FASTRAD. At this time, the user can also add new modules to his configuration.

Do I really need to take the 1-day training? The 1-day training can be arranged at a date at your convenience. It can be performed in your premises or at the TRAD premises. You can learn to use FASTRAD without this training, but you will spend a great deal of time making sure that your modelling, calculation settings and post-processing are done in the most efficient way. If you consider that time is money, then taking the 1-day training will save you time and money for your projects!

- Capabilities

I need to calculate the dose received in my device and to design some radiation shielding. FASTRAD allows you to perform this job by first using its 3D modelling interface, secondly by using its dose calculation engine and thirdly its post-processing feature that indicates the best location for radiation shielding on your 3D model. (See the PRODUCT page).

I’m a GEANT4 user and I am looking for a user interface to create my project. The FASTRAD-GEANT4 module offers a user-friendly interface to define and create your GEANT4 project. You will be able to import STEP geometry, to set the material properties, to define your source characteristics, the physics list and the type of analysis you want to perform.

What types of particles can be considered? The sector analysis method uses a dose depth curve to define the isotropic radiation environment. This dose depth curve is an input of your FASTRAD analysis. It can include all the particles you want. For a non-isotropic environment, you will have to use a Monte Carlo approach. FASTRAD includes a Monte Carlo engine for the energy deposition due to an incident electron flux. This calculation takes into account the creation of secondary electrons and photons.

Can FASTRAD read in a STEP file and re-build the model into simple shapes which will be presented in GDML format, using the Interface configuration? Yes, FASTRAD has a module that lets you insert points, lines and planes starting from any shape. The points can then be used to build simple shapes that can be superimposed on an imported STEP shape. See the HELP menu of the trial version to get an overview of the capabilities.
